Cafe M

On French newlywed couple Amanda and Arthur de Montplaisir’s road trip from Florida to Chicago last year, their first stop was in Savannah, and they fell hard for the historic downtown, which reminded them of cities in Europe where people walk to everything and are surrounded by beauty.

They decided to make Savannah their home and opened their French-inspired Café M, featuring a wide range of coffees, espresso specialty drinks and teas, sweet pastries, savory sandwiches and quiches, and delicacies from France and all over Europe.

“We just fell in love with the city and decided to move here,” said Amanda.

The light-filled café displays art and décor from France and you can sit inside or outside at the kind of small tables and woven chairs that transport you to Paris.

“Here, as in Paris, the tables are small and close together, and I love that when the café is full everyone is talking with each other, just like at home,” Arthur said.

Those with a sweet tooth can try butter or chocolate croissants, macarons, fresh baguettes with butter and French Bonne Maman jam, perhaps accompanied by hot (or iced) chocolate with whipped cream or one of their Signature Tea Over Ice drinks like the Green Mango Peach Iced Tea. How about a butter croissant sandwich with Nutella and fresh banana or organic, gluten-free oatmeal with apple and walnuts?

Café M offers three varieties of traditional French quiche: Quiche Lorraine, with eggs, bacon, onions and cheese; Veggie, with broccoli, cauliflower and carrots; and Salmon, with premium Atlantic salmon and creamy spinach.

They offer inventive croissant melt sandwiches, like Bacon, Blue Cheese & Cranberries or Brie, Honey & Walnuts, and delightful cold sandwiches, like Smoked Salmon with Tzatziki cream or their famous Chicken Salad with Cranberries & Pecans!

Their specialty French baguette sandwiches include The Parisian, with ham, baby Swiss cheese and salted butter, The Normandy, with brie cheese, pear, ham and walnuts; and The Provence with mozzarella, prosciutto ham, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto.

These flavor combinations are also available as salads, served on a bed of fresh organic baby lettuce.

Café M can be a little hard to find at first if you aren’t familiar with the little row of shops next to the River Street Inn on Bay Street, but finding it will be your sweet (and savory) reward.

Café M is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 128 E. Bay Street. Eat in or take out. No reservations. Call (912) 712-3342 or browse the menu at
